Age limits and kayaking in Aruba with kids

Families are a large part of who books these tours, and the questions are always the same three: how young is too young, what does it cost, and will my child be bored or frightened. Answers below, including the honest bits that a brochure would leave out.

The rules, in one paragraph

The minimum age is 6. Children from 6 to 12 pay $69.99; from 13 the adult rate of $89.99 applies. Children ride in a tandem kayak with a parent or another adult from your own party, and minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult throughout. Life jackets are provided and worn by everyone on the water. Basic swimming ability is a participation requirement and it applies to children as much as adults.

If your child is exactly 6, message us on WhatsApp at +1 786 971 2221 before booking so the guide can approve it with the details in front of him rather than meeting the question at the ramp.

Why the minimum age is 6

It is not about weight or strength. It is about attention. A 2.5 hour tour on open water asks a child to sit still, follow an instruction the first time it is given, and stay calm if something surprises them. Below about six that is a lot to ask, and the failure mode is not a grumpy child, it is a child who needs to be somewhere else immediately while nine other people wait in the sun.

We would rather hold the line and have families come back a year later than run a tour nobody enjoys.

Which departure works best with children

8:30 AM, comfortably. Coolest air, calmest water, and children are at their best early. It also means the rest of your day is free, which matters more with kids than adults.

1:00 PM works if your family runs late naturally, but be realistic about the midday heat and about how tired everyone is after it.

5:00 PM is beautiful and it is not a young child's tour. It runs into the usual meltdown window. Older children and teenagers love it.

What 2.5 hours actually feels like for a child

The first twenty minutes are pure novelty and they are easy. The middle is the real tour, and it is where a child either locks into what they are looking at or starts asking how much longer. The difference is almost always whether they have a job.

Give them one. Spotting fish, counting herons, holding the shells, being the one who tells the guide what they saw. Children with a role stay engaged for the whole thing. Children who have been told to sit still do not.

The last stretch is usually quiet, in the good way. Tired children on the water are calm children.

Which route for a family

The lagoon and reef route at Mangel Halto is the gentler of the two: sheltered water, mangrove channels, and two snorkel stops with a lot to look at. Best for younger children and for anyone nervous.

The Sea Glass Island crossing is the one children talk about afterwards, because there is an island, and on it there is treasure. Hunting for frosted glass is close to a perfect activity for a seven year old. It is an open crossing, so it suits confident children and older ones better.

The full comparison is on our which tour page.

Snorkeling with children

Snorkel gear is included in every child's price. Some children take to it in thirty seconds and some never put their face in, and both outcomes are normal. Practise in a hotel pool beforehand if you can, because the first time wearing a mask should not also be the first time over a reef.

A child who does not want to snorkel can stay on the kayak and watch over the side. Nobody is coaxed, pressured or made to feel they failed at something.

Practical things parents ask

Bathrooms. Plan a stop before you arrive. The meeting points are a boat ramp in Savaneta and a beach sign in Pos Chiquito, not facilities, and there is nowhere to go once you launch.

Sun. Children burn faster than adults and the breeze hides it completely. Rash guard, hat with a chin strap, mineral sunscreen before you leave the hotel, reapplied after the snorkel stop.

Snacks. We carry water and fresh fruit. If your child needs something more specific, feed them before rather than bringing it on the kayak.

Arrival. Fifteen minutes before departure, which with children means leaving twenty five minutes earlier than you think.

Questions guests ask

What is the minimum age for your kayak tours?

Six. Children from 6 to 12 pay the child rate of $69.99, and from 13 the adult rate applies. If your child is exactly 6, message us before booking so the guide can approve it.

Do children paddle their own kayak?

No. Children ride in a tandem kayak with a parent or another adult from your party, and minors are accompanied throughout. Older teenagers can take their own seat by arrangement.

Which tour is better for young children?

The Mangel Halto lagoon and reef route. It is sheltered, flat and full of things to look at. The Sea Glass Island crossing is more exciting and is better suited to confident and older children.

What if my child will not put their face in the water?

Then they stay on the kayak and look over the side, which on a clear day shows plenty. It is a completely normal outcome and no guide will push a child into snorkeling.
