Zeerovers, Savaneta: how Aruba's fish pier works

Every island has one place where the food is famous and the seating is a plastic chair. On Aruba that place is Zeerovers, a working fish pier in Savaneta where the catch goes from boat to fryer to your basket the same afternoon. It is easy to love and slightly confusing on your first visit, so here is how it works.

What Zeerovers actually is

Zeerovers sits right on the water in Savaneta, Aruba's old fishing village on the south coast, roughly twenty minutes east of Oranjestad and a little over ten minutes from the airport. The name is Dutch for sea robbers, which suits a spot built on a pier where fishermen still clean the day's catch in plain view of the tables.

It is not a restaurant in the tablecloth sense. It is an open air counter with a fryer behind it, wooden decking over the sea, picnic tables, a bar and a pool table. Aruban families eat here. Visitors found it years ago and the island's tourism board now lists it, but nobody has smoothed the edges off.

There is no menu, and that is the point

Walk to the counter and look at what came in that day, usually fresh fish and shrimp. You say how much you want. It is weighed and priced by the kilo, so your order is settled by appetite rather than by a dish name.

It comes back fried, in a basket, finger food style, with sides along the lines of fries, fried plantain, pickled onion and pan bati, the local cornbread. Then you carry it to a table over the water and eat with your hands while the pelicans work the pier beside you.

Practical notes before you drive out

Cash only. This is the single most common way visitors get caught out. Bring florins or US dollars, both circulate on Aruba.

Closed Mondays. Zeerovers runs Tuesday through Sunday, from around eleven in the morning into the evening. Hours at small island kitchens move with the season, so it is worth a quick check before you make the drive.

No reservations. You queue at the counter, order, wait for your number and find a seat. At peak hours the queue is simply part of the afternoon.

Budget friendly. By Aruba restaurant standards this is an inexpensive meal, which is a large part of why locals keep it in rotation rather than treating it as a novelty.

A few minutes from our kayak ramp

Zeerovers is in Savaneta. So are we. Our Sea Glass Island departures launch from the ramp beside the Flying Fishbone, a short way along the same waterfront, which makes the pairing obvious: paddle first, eat second. Guests do it constantly, usually with wet hair.

Departures run at 8:30 AM, 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
